Hey All,

we've been chugging away with dual large-format HP Designjet 110nr printers.

One has about 8800 pages on it. the other is at about 4600 pages.

Both have become problematic, for different reasons.

Question one: how many page prints do you really expect to get out of your printers?

Question two: HP and Canon appear to be the only games in town if you want to print 24" wide or larger. Is that true, or am I missing another option?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I have no idea about the quality or value but what about Epson?

Epson has the Stylus Pro 7880 for $2995, which is a 24" printer with roll feed capability.

They also have the Stylus Pro 9880, a 44 inch printer for $4995.

If you need just 24 inch, look into the Canon iP610, which is actually cheaper than the Epson.

thanks guys, i appreciate the feedback.

do either of you have a feel for how long such printers "should" last in terms of print volume? 8800 pages doesn't seem like all that many, really, but I have no idea what is a reasonable lifespan.

I have an HP Designjet 220 which finally after 15 years and countless prints no longer prints well (the print head rubber boots need replacing, but hard to get parts and people to service it). I had purchase an Epson 16" wide printer, but it never worked well, burned through huge amounts of ink clearing the print heads and then Epson never provided OSX drivers. I'll never buy another Epson product, if I needed a large format printer it would be another HP. Now if I need prints I send pdf's to a nearby printer, but for my own use I use a tablet pc to view and make notes on pdf's of my drawings.

One of my office mates has a GCC Elite XL 40n black and white laser printer that can print on 12" x 18" paper. I use it for 100% of my in-house (50% sized) check sets and only send out for full sized or color prints. It is 4 years old and still on its first toner cartridge. I find the reduced sized sets really handy and rarely make a full sized set for myself.

regards,
patrick

we're definitely in the 24" wide category here.

If I were setting up shop today I would buy a color laser printer that can print 11x17, and send out print jobs for full size prints to a print shop. Faster, better, cheaper.

After my HP DJ650C/PS finally died (it was built like a tank, but they don't make 'em like that any more), I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet and use a service instead. The catch is, color output is $10/sq ft making a 24"x36" sheet $60 - simply unacceptable for architectural drawings. The print service I use is just B&W except for top shelf presentation boards.

I have a Designjet 800 ps, 24 inches wide, about 5.5 years old. So far it's run about 5,700 D size sheets' worth of printing area. Still going strong. The network connection has gotten flaky so I use USB to print. I'll keep running it until something major gives out, which is likely to be some time off, given the relatively light use (one-person shop).

HP has a new line of Designjets, successor to the 500 series. If I were in the market I'd consider it:

Sadly, that site lacks comprehensive reviews of the Canon printers and admits their office uses HP printers.

So that site is next to worthless as a resource. Sorry.

NRT.Rob, 8800 pages seems like a lot to me. My "low volume" DJ110+nr is still working fine after a couple of years. What kinds of problems have your 110's developed?

Could be you just need to buy printers rated for a higher service duty. Or, buy more 110's and throw them away after, say, 5000 prints...still might be cheaper in the long run than a sturdier machine.

These days, buying cheap color lasers for standard size printing, and then throwing away and buying new when you need toner is cheaper. Disgusting, but cheaper.

I misspoke slightly, we have 130nr's, not 110. Sorry for any confusion on that. They are 24" wide roll fed color printers. We print a lot.

we have been having issues with yellow repeatedly "going bad" even relatively soon after cleanings, along with weird pauses/hiccups in printing and other idosyncratic kind of behaviour. We are replacing belts and stuff like that more commonly now as well, as you might expect, and every time you open them up, you run the risk of not getting them back together again as well as they should be Wink

Looks like the HP510s now come with a roll feed standard. I think I'm reading that right - HP is notoriously vague about this stuff.

My 450 is starting to fail I suspect where the ribbon cable joins the print head. I'm getting erroneous cartridge errors and the latest is a failure of the paper sensor on the print head.

The HP510 in 24" is 2.1k, in 36" 3.2k. I still wonder if the Cannon wide formats will be a better bet at this point. My 11x17 Cannon is the best inkjet printer I've ever had. I'm having a hard time justifying being loyal to HP.
