I'm having a hard time getting an illustrator document into Pcadd7 with editability and look intact. I can import the .ai directly with graphically pleasing results, but none of the editability (there is a fair amount of text, titleblock info etc), or conversly I can export a .dwg from CS3 and import it in Pcadd, but the result looks nothing like the export, with fills reversed, some objects dissapeared, etc. Anyone have some insight on this one?

Thanks, that helped some. As it turns out the EPS3 didn't work t all, but I could go as high as an EPS8 (no luck with an EPS9) which allowed me to imbed fonts. It came across somewhat less FUBAR, which is what I'll have to settle for. I know the very nice folks at ES are around here frequently, so in the chance one of them happens on this thread I'll ask- why the import version compatibility issues? Illustrator 9 came out in 2000 if I'm not mistaken, and we're now 5 versions beyond 8. Even getting to CS1 compatibility would seem to be a worthy goal, but hey, what do I know (when it comes to programming the answer is zilch)?

| Just to update, it turns out the hours the graphic designer spent tweaking kerning etc. on our new titleblock were wasted, as it seems the fussing with text made the import go haywire. Text items that had been altered came across as a random line pattern. Live and learn... I've posted another thread about white text in 7. thanks! |

Possible workarounds ---
Though I haven't tried bringing text across from Illustrator to PC8 lately (haven't made PC8 buy yet), I do know that bringing fully editable vector from Illustrator to PC, is as simple as cut & paste.
http://powercadd.designcommunity.com/topic-19182.html
Try this ---
Import a PDF of the logo done in Illustrator, into PC.
Use this PDF as a background template in PC8
Use PC8 text & kerning tools to do new text over the top of the PDF's text.
Then copy and past the remaining part of the logo, from Illustrator to PC8
Hide or trash the PDF.
OR,
In Illustrator, convert text to outline, then group this outline of text.
Copy and past the logo and the grouped outline of text, from Illustrator to PC.
Use PC8's text & kerning tools to generate new text over the top of the outlined text you pasted from Illustrator.
Remove outlined text.
Hopefully, one of the above will give you something that is the same as your Graphic Artist's artwork, AND, something that is fully editable. And if there isn't too much text, this shouldn't take very long at all. |

| Thanks- that's basically what I did, except I didn't adjust kerning for the text (I didn't know there was a kerning tool until reading your post). There's not that much text, I should buckle down and do it (standard titleblock jargon). Thanks for taking the time to respond! |

I don't know about PC8, but PC7 does still seem to be able to open Illustrator 3 EPS files. Whenever I've done this in the past, I was more interested in graphics than text, so I'm not sure what you can or can't expect to come through for editable text.
If you're talking about an exact look to some text that is a part of your title block, like a company name that doesn't change, you might try converting the text to graphic outlines in Illustrator before going over to PC. One catch to some designs: Illustrator can have holes in objects (many letters of the alphabet do, so it's a cornerstone of Postscript), PC can't. _________________ Rob
