Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you weekly green design and building news from around the world.
What do you think - is this a good idea for a global movement?
"SYDNEY, Australia (AP): Thousands of residents as well as hundreds of businesses and officials in Australia's largest city have pledged to switch off the lights and darken Sydney for an hour this week to show concern over global warming.
"Organizers hope the event will be a dramatic start to a campaign encouraging Australians to conserve energy by turning off lights and other electrical equipment _ steps they say could cut Sydney's greenhouse gas emissions by 5 percent a year.
"If all goes to plan, the iconic Sydney Opera House and harbor bridge, along with dozens of skyscrapers and thousands of homes across the city, will go dark at 7:30 p.m. (0830GMT)"

Having published this newsletter, I want to also register a complaint about one of the stories, from the Boston Globe:
Green and Growing - Boston Globe, 2007.0326
http://www.boston.com/news/world/asia/articles/2007/03/26/green_and_growing/
This is generally a good story about the high energy efficiency of affluent society in Japan, compared to the much lower efficiency of affluent society in the U.S.
My complaint is mainly with the headline, though the terminology runs through the article.
Energy-efficiency and reduction of carbon dioxide emission are important, essential components of "green". But they are not enough.
I think it is great to recognize the energy efficiency of affluence in Japan. And I love the country, its culture, its people in many - most -ways.
But I object to glibly giving a broad-brush appelation of 'green' to a country which is a global leader in abuse of world oceans in general, and their most intelligent inhabitants in particular.
For instance:
Stop the dolphin and whale killings in Taiji
http://www.petitiononline.com/golfinho/petition.html
The global crisis of biodiversity is as serious as, and is amplified by, the global climate change crisis. "Greenness" requires responsibility to both, and more. |

yes and the apology to women sex slaves as well as a more holistic approach as stated above. It reminds me of the Green Architect who eats hamburgers and drinks soda and thus can't sustain the principles of green.
great newsletter, love it! _________________ The most necessary/useful piece of learning is that which unlearns what is untrue: 'evil'
