A little over a year ago I purchased an Intel MacBook Pro. For a year, I never heard the fan and remarked about how my Pro was cooler than my wife's Intel MacBook. Now this puppy is getting quite hot. The heat is comming from the keyboard area above the battery pop out.
Has anyone experienced this? What to do? Also it seems as though my battery life is much shorter. This is probably due to the fan use.
Any help would be appreciated. |

| I have a MacBookPro and use it very heavily. I find that the battery performance really drops off after a year's use, so I usually end up replacing it. |

Actually, after visiting the Apple MacBook Pro forum I got advice to check about this mac/hardware/power and the battery is very close to original spec. Full Charge Capacity is reading (mAh): 6002
Others are experiencing the same problem with good battery performance and no one seems to have a handle on what is going on.
I installed smcFanControl and it gives me the CPU temp and allows me to control the minimum fan speed. This has helped a great deal and dropped the temp about 10-15C. I can hold the thing on my lap again but still have to live with battery life problems because of the constant fan usage.
For a year, I didn't know what the fan sounded like I sure know now. |

| Try running Activity Monitor and as you work watch it to see if there is a process which is using a lot of CPU cycles, or if you are out of RAM-if you set the pie chart to RAM it should always have at least 1/4 as green (free) or you start paging in/out to the hard drive which creates heat and uses up battery life. Certain widgets can really consume RAM and CPU cycles, also you should have the full 2Gb RAM in any Intel laptop to run several programs at once (such as PCadd, Mail, Safari). |

| I had had this same problem on a Macbook Pro with 1Gb of RAM, and by watching Activity Monitor found that PC7 was slowly consuming RAM and after several hours had grown so large the there was no free RAM left. A restart of PC7 will fix this for another hour or so. Upgrading the RAM to 2Gb gave it enough room to go for several days without a restart of PC7. This appears to be an issue with PC7 running on Intel hardware instead of the PPC processors it was originally developed to run on. PC8 which is Intel only does not have this issue. |

OK, this is weird! After running the fans via smcFanControl software at 5,000+ RPM minimum for more than a day, my computer is running much cooler. I noticed it this morning. It was running from 48-55C so I turned off the software and rebooted. I have been running for a several hours now with no fan noise and a cool computer. The temp is about 45C now and only goes up with video use but not over 55C.
I can only surmise that there was some dust on the board that was retaining heat and now it is gone due to the fan/air velocity. Either that, or the MAC Gods have heard my plea and answered my prayers. |
