I'm not sure if glass tiles will withstand the heat generated from a wood burning fireplace.

I believe you're all right. Ceramic tile is often used on a fireplace front, and glass would be no more vulnerable than ceramic, I should think.

The code in many places requires a non-combustible material for the first foot or so above the firebox opening, in fact, so glass tile would be greatly preferable to wood !

I'm not convinced a glossy finish in a functional fireplace is a good aesthetic choice...unless the owner/user will be cleaning it after every use. The beauty of the glass tile will be sooty and that contrast will make it look dirty...which a fireplace usually is. That's why most are lined with stones and bricks and usually in dark colors. Instead, consider using the glass tiles for the surround.

Ah -- I didn't read carefully and assumed the intent was for a surround. I was involved last year with Spark and a custom alternative. The black steel interior is there for a purpose. However, the flame is confined to a linear strip down the middle of the firebox, so it may still be possible, if you're determined. Start by contacting Spark technical people. The adhesive would be a critical element -- and you'll be cleaning it a lot. All in all, probably not advisable.

There are two Spark models, one flueless and with glass doors, the other requires a flue and can be open (as I recall it). A bit confusing. It's a great look. We ended up needing a custom size so had Automated Fire and Water Effects in Las Vegas build one. !0" flue with exhaust fan.

This is an interesting fireplace...not the ribbon, nor the ultra modern look...but instead being ventless and flueless. That's a major fire hazard. I read the specs, the warranty and installation guide...(out of curiosity)...and first and foremost, the ventless is not allowed in New York, or California or any place above 3,500 feet...and it has very specific requirements for fresh air/verntilation, regardless of non-vented option.

In other words, you couldn't pay me to design a house with the ventless...it's too much liability in my opinion. I would highly recommend the vented fireplace.

Anyway, regardless...the warranty is voide if there are any alterations...and it's standard black satin interior finish with one option of stainless steel (which will get sooty, I'm still certain). In other words, I'd go with the black. And I wouldn't dare consider custom fabricating one on your own...instead, at a minimum, have Sparks customize their standard fireplace.

And ultimately, back to the first question, I would not recommend lining a fireplace with glass tile, again for aesthetic reasons...but if you build a typical/common brick fireplace (complete with flue, etc) it is indeed possible to line it with glass tile...and still have an LP flame. But you need the non-combustible chimney for that and bit of professional customization to get the fireplace to look ultra-modern.

Personally, nothing is more "ultra-modern" than a black line direplace and stainless steel surround, preferrably with a curved surface.

Here are some other ideas on this page:

LOL....I am. I just think the last one is cool! And ventless is not impossible...just comes with some risk.

For the truly flame-phobic, there are illusionistic lighted (and heated) wall fireplace appliances; my neighbor just bought one for a few hundred bucks. The glassed-in "fire" grows behind a small group of white-charred "logs" that appear to glow red in places, and the flame illusion is eerily convincing, with no detectable repeat to the flame shapes.

But. . .fake is fake. I wish that real fireplaces weren't slowly (?) being snuffed out by safety and pollution laws. Our virtual world grows, and the real one shrinks. . .
