Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you weekly green design and building news from around the world.
At the 150th anniversay national AIA Convention in San Antonio last week, Al Gore gave a really super culminating presentation, to a strong, sincere, sustained standing ovation.
And there were many excellent green design and building presentations, including one from Doug Farr, based on his forthcoming book on green community design and LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED ND), in which he pointed out:
"It is no longer acceptable to make a walkable place without green buildings; or to build green buildings in the wrong places; or to fail to optimize infrastructure for the place and buildings."

LEED Gold Hospital - ArchitectureWeek, 2007.0502
http://www.architectureweek.com/2007/0502/environment_1-1.html
Because of unusually strict technical, mechanical, and air quality requirements, hospitals are one of the most difficult building types to design sustainably. Yet the Providence Newberg Medical Center by Mahlum Architects has achieved a LEED Gold rating — the first hospital in the United States to do so. It is also the first U.S. hospital to acquire enough renewable electric power to meet all its needs.

This Week's Quiz -
The Roman Colosseum is an amphitheatre begun by Vespasian
in AD 70 and completed by Domitian 12 years later. How
many people could it seat: 15,000? 30,000? 50,000?
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0502/quiz.html
Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
It is hard to determine exact numbers, but it has been
estimated that commercial and residential buildings
consume about 65 percent of all electricity used in the
United States and about 40 percent of all raw materials.
These buildings account for about what percentage of
greenhouse gases?
