MAKE NO MISTAKE ... consider this to be no spin....FREEDOM IS SPREADING IN THE MIDDLE EAST ....I repeat, no spin here
When President George Bush stood up at his inauguration speech in January and proclaimed his support for freedom and democracy around the world, his critics sneered. Democracy was not possible, whined the left. Arab countries? Just a bunch of tribes with flags! They could never self-govern. Bush wasn't being realistic, we were told. What was he going to do....invade every country that was not a democracy?
Well, totalitarian regimes continue to fall like dominoes in the Middle East. Lebanon's Syrian puppet prime minister and his cabinet quit yesterday, yielding to the thousands of protesters parked outside that were demanding democracy.

They are also demanding that Syria get out of their country. Just take a look at some of the quotes from the demonstrators: "I love America. Tell Bush to come here. Thank him, thank Chirac (hey, nobody's perfect.) This is a great day for all Arab people." But wait...I thought they all hated us |

Yes, it does seem to be good news.
Now, prepare to hear Bush take full credit, just as the addled buffoon Reagan took credit for the collapse of Soviet Communism.

And it's not just Lebanon.....there are going to be multi-party elections in Egypt. Not full-blown elections, but at least it's a start. Saudi Arabian leaders are also considering some electoral processes. Egyptians, Syrians, Iranians, Lebanese, Saudis .. they all want a serving of what Afghanistan and Iraq are having....simply amazing isn't it?
Look for the media (and it looks like SDR ) to try and minimize this as much as possible. After all, it doesn't fit the Bush-bashing template. But make no mistake...Arab dictators throughout the Middle East have been served notice: Liberty is on the march. |

But your straw man arguments are bogus, as is the whole attempt to pump up your heros by criticizing vague others. I never heard any commentator, certainly not on the left, saying freedom and/or democracy were not possible. That was never the issue against the wanton invasion of Iraq and the rest of the "War on Terror".
The real background question was/is whether it was/is necessary to kill hundreds of thousands and maim many times more to get there.
And while apparent motions twoards democracy are most welcome, reporting and analysis on these things is complex. The history of this is still in the earliest stages on unfolding.
Let's keep hoping and working for the best, and trying to avoid doing the worst. |

Since you chose to change the tone of the post KM, and lest anyone become complacent and forget the real reason we are still fighting the war on terror..... Osama is back in the news. Our U.S. intelligence officials say Bin Laden has directed that al-Zarqawi and his bunch over in Iraq turn their attention toward attacks in the US. Interesting.....it seems OBL is ordering the insurgents in Iraq to throw in the towel over there. But some thought that war was hopeless? Anyway, back to the threats against America.
Bin Laden has contacted al-Zarqawi and asked for the shift in tactics. Now think about this for a minute. The purpose of the "war on terror", whether in Afghan, Iraq or otherwise, is so that we fight the enemies abroad instead of at home. These Islamic terrorists that we are able to extinguish overseas can't darken the door at any of our airports. So now they appear to be turning their sites on us. Not concerned? You should be.
We haven't had a terrorist attack in this country since 9/11. What could be next? A shopping mall? A sporting event? A bus terminal? All it would take is one of these Islamofascist to put on a suicide bomber vest, duck into a crowded public place and pull the cord. Frankly, I'm surprised it hasn't already happened.
This is just a friendly reminder -- a reminder that will be ignored by many -- as to why the War on Terrorism must be fought and won. As the victorious cause of democracy and freedom expands through the Middle East, terrorists like Bin Laden will become increasingly concerned that their time is gone. They strive for something spectacular, and fast, to turn the attention back to them and their goals for the destruction of the Western society. |
